Abu Musuuza

Abu is one of the leading authorities on social entrepreneurship in East Africa. As East Africa Director he was at the forefront of introducing the field as he led Ashoka's expansion into the region by opening Ashoka's office in the Nairobi in 2007.

Abu has worked extensively in the region supporting social entrepreneurs and founding two social enterprises. In late 2009 Abu co-founded Village Energy (U) Ltd and grew it from a home based business to the leading clean energy company designing, financing and installing solar systems for micro small and medium business based in rural off-grid locations in Uganda. Today Village Energy operates 5 offices across the country, partners with leading financial institutions and has installed over 5000 solar systems.

In 2018 Abu stood down as Chief Exeucitive Officer at Village Energy to work on his second social enterprise, Flip Africa. Flip Africa is a online platform that innovates new ways for mass employment for African youth by democratizing the process of finding work and ensuring dignified pay. Youth unemployment is possibly the biggest crisis the African continent faces today whose impact is being felt in Europe and the Middle East.

Abu believes that work is a human right and that everyone must be able to find it as and when they require it. Abu's ambition is to ensure every African youth can find work and get access to social safety nets. Abu has a deep passion for history, particularly African history and the history of religions.

Abu is the Chairman Board of Directors at Village Energy. He is an Ashoka Fellow, Acumen Fellow and an Echoing Green Fellow.
